Ken:
Ironic, huh? I have a standing rule against putting the D-Word (as in Depression) in a headline, but sometimes the news just seems to justify a full-throated scream. I'll take a look at it and see if we need to dial it back. Thanks for the note. Best, Ben

Ben, a couple of days ago you wrote an excellent column pointing out that now is the time to remain cool and not panic where the economy is concerned. Did you forget to show it to your headline writers?

Would still like to have that lunch at some point.

Some time ago, I wrote an editorial about animal cruelty in light of the Michael Vick debacle. I noted that no one ethnic group had an 'in' on this type of crime. I noted that Michael Vick was talented, nice looking, and very blessed. I noted that I did not understand how a man so gifted could come down to the level of abusing animals. I noted that people of all ethnic groups abuse animals. We are not allowed to title our own articles in the paper. I noted in my editorial that animal abuse has no color, no ethnicity, no economic background. What was my article titled in the Ledger Enquirer? "The Color of Cruelty". I did not appreciate that! It made it seem that I was insinuating that Black people abuse animals more than other ethnic groups. I made it clear in my article that this was not the case, but it was a shame that someone of Vick's looks and talents had to go so low as to abuse animals. I have been keeping my comments here on line. I used to like to write a letter to the editor. Not after that. I don't know who titled my editorial, 'The Color of Cruelty' but it was not very nice nor accurate. Ellen Horn
